Diocesan Commission on Occult and Satanism

On 5th October 2005 the Diocesan Commission on Occult and Satanism expressed itself through a press release saying that the Halloween feast is of pagan origin.

Archdiocese of Malta

By means of a degree dated April 13th, 1995, Archbishop Joseph Mercieca appointed the Diocesan Commission on Occult and Satanism. Hereunder is the Curia's decree:

By means of this degree we hereby establish the Diocesan Commission on Occult and Satanism The role of the Commission is to:

1. study occultism, spiritism and satanism from a theological stand point and take also into consideration natural phenomena pertaining to psychology, psychiatry and parasychology, which could help authentic discernment;
2. keep the Archbishop informed about what is taking place;
3. give advice about any possible pastoral activity in the circumstances;
4. help members of the Church in Malta facing such problems.

As members of the Commission for the coming five years I appoint:

Fr. Elias Vella O.F.M. Conv. - President of the Commission
Fr. Marcello Ghirlando O.F.M. - Secretary of the Commission
Fr. Joseph Borg S.J.and Fr. Hugh Cremona O.P. - Members
